STARTING OVER AGAIN

I had an interesting, well slightly interesting discussion with a few friends last night. We talked about what job or career we would pursue if we were starting over again in life.

What job or career would you pursue if you were starting over again?

Slightly smugly, I said that I couldn't think of too many careers I'd like to pursue than the one I did, a university academic teaching and researching politics. However, when pushed by others, I did relent and say that I perhaps would have liked to have been a lawyer. Being an academic and a lawyer are in some ways quite similar. Both involve research and both involve public speaking.

However, there was one caveat I added to my choice. I said there's no way I'd be a lawyer acting for a certain former US President even if I would earn loads of money defending him in his many court cases. I also wouldn't act for Jon Buckheit in his case against Andrew Conru!

It's often said that lawyers can't choose their cases. Maybe that's the case as a junior lawyer, but senior lawyers must surely choose their cases.

  1. Senior lawyers definitely have a choice, less experienced probably have less of a choice…but there’s definitely still a choice…unless you’re a public defender or prosecutor then you get what you get.

Writer. I love writing when inspired.

    1. Being a writer would be a great job. And it's never too late to be a writer!
I've just realised there's another advantage of this site over AFF, at least for me. I can now mention politics without some dimwits on AFF telling me that 'this is sex site'!

    2. It definitely is a silver lining for me. I always found it difficult to politely reply to those dimwit comments on AFF, not least because they went out of their way to say that rather than just moving on.

    3. You know how some people are, if your aren’t doing or saying what they want, they have to tell you about it.

    4. It does seem that way. It verges on trolling or at least it's control-freakery.

    5. Reminds me of someone…starts with an A…Asshole? No that’s not it. Absurd? No, it’ll come to me. Awful? Nope. Arrogant ? That can’t be right. I’m describing him but can’t seem to place my finger on his name.

      Oh, right, Ali

    6. I won't have a bad word said about Muhammad Ali (unless it's about how he treated his wife) or Ali Baba (despite his befriending of forty thieves), but if we're talking Ali the Customer Services Man then bring it on.

    7. We both know we're talking about power tripping Ali from Customer Disservice.

    8. Smiling here with the mention of Ali as you both nailed it. Egotistical power tripper is so right..

  2. I think although my career was quite boring, my skills were very well suited because my brain loves working with spreadsheets and solving number puzzles. If I were to go in an entirely different direction - perhaps something having to do with the body - exercise physiologist or personal trainer or massage therapist. And I do enjoy writing! But I don't know that I would have the discipline to turn out an entire book. Short blog posts are fun. : )

    1. I was tempted to become an accountant; I'm still impressed with the idea of forensic accounting.
Those short blog posts can be easily turned into a book!

    1. There'll be always be a need for poets, though those pushing artificial intelligence (AI) may say different.

    2. Thanks for posting it again and have absolutely no idea why it would disappear again like the others did yesterday..Mind boggling and yes frustrating.

    3. I find AI taking over very alarming and scary for one and all. Technology can both be good and bad especially when in the wrong hands and replacing Humans..

    4. I too am worried about AI as it seems to be gathering apace with very little control over it.
Tech people always stress the benefits but always downplay the risks.

    6. I keep saying, they need to start giving media literacy courses. I don't understand why it's taking them so long. Misinformation on the internet has been around for decades.

    7. What a great idea and yes it should have happened a long time ago..

    8. Media literacy isn't taught here either. I think part of the reason why not is that right-wing governments don't trust (often left-wing) teachers to run such courses.

    12. It's quite interesting. It takes about 30 minutes to complete. The questionnaire is very thorough.

    14. Some of the questions are repetitive, deliberately repetitive, to ascertain consistency between answers.
A few questions are annoying because the questionnaire tends to assume it's only Americans answering the questions, but it's easy to 'translate' those questions to, say, Britain or Canada.

      Delete
    15. Now you have me wondering and looking later to see if Canada specifically has one.As you know both our two countries have different governments and policies.

    16. I think there's only one version of the questionnaire. I had no problem answering the questions and probably Canada and Britain have more in common than with America.
