STARTING OVER AGAIN
I had an interesting, well slightly interesting discussion with a few friends last night. We talked about what job or career we would pursue if we were starting over again in life.
What job or career would you pursue if you were starting over again?
Slightly smugly, I said that I couldn't think of too many careers I'd like to pursue than the one I did, a university academic teaching and researching politics. However, when pushed by others, I did relent and say that I perhaps would have liked to have been a lawyer. Being an academic and a lawyer are in some ways quite similar. Both involve research and both involve public speaking.
However, there was one caveat I added to my choice. I said there's no way I'd be a lawyer acting for a certain former US President even if I would earn loads of money defending him in his many court cases. I also wouldn't act for Jon Buckheit in his case against Andrew Conru!
It's often said that lawyers can't choose their cases. Maybe that's the case as a junior lawyer, but senior lawyers must surely choose their cases.
Senior lawyers definitely have a choice, less experienced probably have less of a choice…but there’s definitely still a choice…unless you’re a public defender or prosecutor then you get what you get.
ReplyDeleteWriter. I love writing when inspired.
Being a writer would be a great job. And it's never too late to be a writer!
DeleteI've just realised there's another advantage of this site over AFF, at least for me. I can now mention politics without some dimwits on AFF telling me that 'this is sex site'!
Yet another silver lining
DeleteIt definitely is a silver lining for me. I always found it difficult to politely reply to those dimwit comments on AFF, not least because they went out of their way to say that rather than just moving on.
DeleteYou know how some people are, if your aren’t doing or saying what they want, they have to tell you about it.
DeleteIt does seem that way. It verges on trolling or at least it's control-freakery.
DeleteReminds me of someone…starts with an A…Asshole? No that’s not it. Absurd? No, it’ll come to me. Awful? Nope. Arrogant ? That can’t be right. I’m describing him but can’t seem to place my finger on his name.
DeleteOh, right, Ali
I won't have a bad word said about Muhammad Ali (unless it's about how he treated his wife) or Ali Baba (despite his befriending of forty thieves), but if we're talking Ali the Customer Services Man then bring it on.
DeleteWe both know we're talking about power tripping Ali from Customer Disservice.
DeleteSmiling here with the mention of Ali as you both nailed it. Egotistical power tripper is so right..
DeleteI think although my career was quite boring, my skills were very well suited because my brain loves working with spreadsheets and solving number puzzles. If I were to go in an entirely different direction - perhaps something having to do with the body - exercise physiologist or personal trainer or massage therapist. And I do enjoy writing! But I don't know that I would have the discipline to turn out an entire book. Short blog posts are fun. : )
ReplyDeleteI was tempted to become an accountant; I'm still impressed with the idea of forensic accounting.
DeleteThose short blog posts can be easily turned into a book!
People used to tell me on that site I should write a book of erotic poetry, but I only did it for fun and to keep the mind creative. I had wanted to be a recording engineer before my skating career became a 30 year one for me..
DeleteJoy - I've managed to get your comment to show up. I'm now officially an IT genius!
DeleteLOL.. I am bowing down to your IT expertise now....lol.👏👏👏👏👏😂
DeleteI'm now going to set up an IT troubleshooting consultancy!
DeleteI will be your first client ...lol.👌
DeleteMy rates are very competitive!
DeleteWhat are your rates for remote services?....lol.😉😉
DeleteMy rates for remote services are very low!
DeleteDuly noted..My last remote service was next to nothing..lol. How Low can you go Mr. IT man?....lol.
DeleteI can plumb the depths if need be!
DeleteLMAO!!!!!!!!
DeleteI've been in the F&B industry, been an Executive Assistant (aka glorified babysitter), and translator. The things I like to do are more suited as hobbies rather than career choices. Maybe become some sort of science nerd? 🤔
ReplyDeleteSome people, even bloggers, make a living out of their hobbies.
DeleteCOMMENT LEFT BY JOY WHICH DIDN'T SHOW UP ON THIS THREAD!

There'll be always be a need for poets, though those pushing artificial intelligence (AI) may say different.
DeleteThanks for posting it again and have absolutely no idea why it would disappear again like the others did yesterday..Mind boggling and yes frustrating.
DeleteI find AI taking over very alarming and scary for one and all. Technology can both be good and bad especially when in the wrong hands and replacing Humans..
DeleteI too am worried about AI as it seems to be gathering apace with very little control over it.
DeleteTech people always stress the benefits but always downplay the risks.
I quite agree with your outlook on it and wish the masses would not follow or believe everything they read and hear..
DeleteI keep saying, they need to start giving media literacy courses. I don't understand why it's taking them so long. Misinformation on the internet has been around for decades.
DeleteWhat a great idea and yes it should have happened a long time ago..
DeleteMedia literacy isn't taught here either. I think part of the reason why not is that right-wing governments don't trust (often left-wing) teachers to run such courses.
DeleteI am neither right wing, nor left.My wings, I just spread and fly away like a Lenny Kravitz song..
DeleteHave you ever completed the Political Compass questionnaire online to assess your political persuasions?
DeleteNo I have not..Maybe I should..
DeleteIt's quite interesting. It takes about 30 minutes to complete. The questionnaire is very thorough.
DeleteSounds very thorough if it takes 30 minutes to complete..
DeleteSome of the questions are repetitive, deliberately repetitive, to ascertain consistency between answers.
DeleteA few questions are annoying because the questionnaire tends to assume it's only Americans answering the questions, but it's easy to 'translate' those questions to, say, Britain or Canada.
Now you have me wondering and looking later to see if Canada specifically has one.As you know both our two countries have different governments and policies.
DeleteI think there's only one version of the questionnaire. I had no problem answering the questions and probably Canada and Britain have more in common than with America.
