MY SPORTING SUMMER

England scoring against Slovakia in Euro 2024:

This summer, so far, has involved a lot of time watching sport. First are the Euros, or more formally the UEFA European Football Championship. The Euros have nearly finished. Surprisingly given how badly they've played, England have made the final to be held this coming Sunday. I don't fancy England's chances against Spain unless it goes to penalties.

Second is the Tour de France. It's halfway in the tour. It looks as if it's going to be another classic duel between Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegard. Tadej Pogačar started well and is in the lead but Jonas Vingegaard looks strong and maybe even stronger than my favourite cyclist.

Third will be the Paris Olympics which start on 26 July. Britain always do well in the sitting-down sports like canooing, cycling, horse riding, kayaking, rowing and sailing!

What sports do you watch?
And what sports do or did you play?

I like watching almost all sport with the exception of car racing and skiing.

There was a time I used to play far more sport than I watched. At various times in my life, I regularly played football (soccer), rugby union, (field) hockey, cricket, basketball, table tennis, tennis, badminton and squash. Now, I probably could only play walking football!

  1. I watch a lot of hockey during the Winter but do not watch a lot of sports in the summer as I spend most of my afternoons outside reading..

    1. I used to go many ice hockey games but now I've moved I don't go so much now. My city centre apartment was literally over the road from where the Nottingham Panthers played.

    1. Cat herding sounds like an impossible sport!

    2. It is, though much more amusing to watch than golf.

    3. I can see why it would be far more amusing than golf. Golf isn't funny! :)

  3. Many thing are. True nor fun in my extremely limited experience. A nice walk ruined by an absurd game.

    1. I quite like a round of crazy golf. I have a chance to hole in one! :)

    2. And if you run into the right lady golfer at the 19th hole, one in a hole. You may find this amusing https://www.kansascity.com/opinion/article289942074.html

    3. Thanks for the link. I've heard about Trump's cheating ways at golf.

    4. Welcome. It's referenced in article that a book devoted to that.

    5. I don't think my head can handle reading another book on Trump. Every book I've read about him more than confirms my worst fears!

    6. No need, the gist is he cheats at golf every way possible and then lies about it.

    7. He cheats at and lies about everything. Trump did so much damage not conceding the last presidential election even though he scuttled out of the White House at the last minute. When the Tories lost the general election last week, at least they had the good grace to accept the result without questioning the idea and practice of democratic elections.

    8. Yes, even that which doesn't benefit him. Worse is he's convinced millions that it's true. Even worse is machinations to steal the upcoming election, e.g. taking over offices responsible for elections at local level.

    9. I just can't believe how he's done it, how he's conned people to either give him money or vote for him. But he has which means I need to keep up with things!

    10. Nor I, it's beyond my comprehension. I can understand some thousands of rabid loyalists, but not millions that think his plusses outweigh his minuses.

    11. I can never understand, and this I know is simplistic, why poor people vote for rich people.

    12. To some extent, at least at the national level here, are no poor people to vote for. And, somehow the rich people can sell they're not so different.

    13. I was being simplistic. When I meant poor, I was also including the middle class, middle-income earning people. And when I meant rich, I was thinking of the super-rich.

    14. Anyway tomorrow is the day that Spain play England in the Euros final. Sexy (Spain) versus ugly (England) football. Maybe the ugly will win on penalties!
